Soft Launch for the Aviation Sciences and Aerospace Engineering Academy.

The soft launch for the Aviation Sciences and Aerospace Engineering (ASASE) Academy was held at Jimma University on September 7-8, 2024. The event focused on the establishment of the ASASE Academy, with various authorities delivering speeches highlighting the significance of this initiative.

In his opening speech, Dr. Jemal Abafita, President of Jimma University, shared a true story about Abbaamaccaa Abbaabulguu, also known as Abbaamaccaa Kiilolee, who had a dream of aviation. He recounted how Abbaamaccaa attempted to purchase an airplane by sending a land rover full of money to the then king, but his efforts were unsuccessful.

Despite this, Abbaamaccaa, now very old, still hopes to see his vision realized. Dr. Jemal stated, “Fortunately, the old man’s dream has come true; we must embark on a long journey where research and development will be key. I urge all stakeholders to turn this dream into a reality.” He concluded his speech by expressing heartfelt gratitude to the partners who traveled from the University of Maryland in the U.S.A.

Captain Solomon Gizaw emphasized that Jimma University is the first university in Ethiopia to offer education in aviation, stating, “This is not a competition, nor is it a game; rather, it is life.”

Captain Abiy Mekonnen further elaborated that the establishment of the ASASE Academy is the result of dedicated efforts by His Excellency Mr. Getachew Mingiste, General Director of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority, and Mr. Kora Tushune, the State Minister.

He noted, “Instead of exporting other commodities, we could be exporting technicians and pilots to meet global demands. In the next 2 or 3 years, we will have a new airport in Bishoftu.

Additionally, Rwanda and other African countries are opening new airports, creating opportunities for pilots and technicians from Ethiopia. Worldwide, there is a need for 600,000 pilots and 700,000 mechanics. Therefore, we are developing aviation education that will benefit not only Africa but the entire world.

Mr. Kassie Yimam, President of Ethiopian Aviation University, remarked on the importance of the aviation academy at Jimma University for the development of Ethiopian aviation. He pledged to collaborate closely with relevant bodies.
