INSTITUTE OF OROMO STUDIES (IOS)

  • Advancing Knowledge • Preserving Heritage • Shaping the Future

The Institute of Oromo Studies, established in 2015 at Jimma University, is a pioneering research institute dedicated to advancing research and scholarship on Oromo society, language, governance, culture, history, and indigenous knowledge systems, while engaging with contemporary socio-economic challenges and dynamisms. It embraces an interdisciplinary approach, integrating diverse fields of study to address pressing issues and promote sustainable development.

IOS serves as a central platform for interdisciplinary research, academic dialogue, and cultural preservation, connecting indigenous knowledge with contemporary scholarship and contributing to regional, national, and global development.

About the Institute of Oromo Studies

The Institute of Oromo Studies was established in March 2015 as a bold and strategic response to a long-standing gap in scholarship, the fragmentation of Oromo studies across disciplines, institutions, and geographical spaces. It was conceived as the first integrated research hub for Oromo studies to bring together dispersed knowledge and scholarship, providing coherence, visibility, and intellectual rigor to the study of Oromo society and its rich systems of knowledge.

IOS provides a structured platform for the systematic documentation, critical analysis, and global dissemination of indigenous knowledge systems that have been sustained over generations through oral traditions, cultural practices, and social institutions.

Operating within the core mission of Jimma University, teaching, research, and community engagement, IOS has evolved into a dynamic center of excellence. Over the past decade, it has coordinated interdisciplinary research, organized international conferences, and facilitated dialogue among scholars, practitioners, and communities, thus serving as a central node connecting local knowledge systems with global academic discourse.

The Institute’s work spans a wide range of thematic areas, including Oromo governance systems such as the Gadaa system, language and literature, cultural heritage, indigenous knowledge systems, and contemporary social transformations. These areas are not only of academic interest but are also deeply relevant to policy, development, and societal well-being.

As a knowledge hub, IOS serves as a repository of scholarly resources, including books, journals, theses, dissertations, and digital archives. Through its Museum and Gallery, and Library and Archive, the Institute preserves cultural artifacts and intellectual heritage for future generations.

While firmly grounded in Oromo studies, IOS embraces a broader vision of inclusive and comparative scholarship, engaging with the diverse indigenous knowledge systems of Ethiopia’s nations, nationalities, and peoples. In doing so, it contributes to a more holistic and globally relevant understanding of culture, knowledge, and development.

The Institute of Oromo Studies envisions a future in which indigenous knowledge systems are not only preserved but actively shape global academic discourse, policy, and development pathways. By 2035, IOS aims to become a recognized center of excellence, integrating research, digital innovation, and international collaboration. Strategic priorities

  • Position IOS as a leading center for research on indigenous governance, culture, and knowledge systems.
  • Develop advanced digital archives and platforms for documenting and disseminating Oromo knowledge globally.
  • Strengthening partnerships with universities, research institutions, and scholars worldwide, including the diaspora.
