OBJECTIVES
The core objectives of the IOS are to:
1. Serve as a central platform for multidisciplinary research on Oromo by fostering
collaboration among scholars across institutions, disciplines, and borders.
2. Undertake rigorous, innovative, and policy-relevant research on Oromo indigenous
knowledge systems, governance, language, culture, and social transformation.
3. Lead academic and public discourse through organizing conferences, symposiums,
workshops, and training programs that stimulate critical dialogue and knowledge
exchange.
4. Produce and disseminate knowledge through publishing journals, books, proceedings,
and policy briefs that enhance the visibility and impact of Oromo studies.
5. Establish and strengthen knowledge systems, including a Library and Archive for
scholarly resources and an Ethnological Museum and Gallery for cultural preservation
and public engagement.
6. Document, safeguard, and promote Oromo cultural heritage, ensuring its transmission to
future generations while enhancing its relevance in contemporary society.
7. Elevate the profile of Oromo studies by strengthening partnerships and fostering
international collaboration, positioning itself as a key contributor to global academic
discourse.
8. Provide evidence-based consultancy to inform public policy, support decision-making,
and contribute to the socio-economic and cultural development of Oromia and Ethiopia.
9. Train and mentor emerging scholars and practitioners, equipping them with the skills and
knowledge necessary to advance research, policy, and practice in areas related to
indigenous knowledge and development.
