CIH-JU

Since GC 2002, there has been a close collaboration between the medical faculties of Jimma University (JU) and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich, Germany. This has included the bi-directional exchange of students, residents and staff, as well as joint research activities. By 2009 GC, when the Centre for International Health (CIH) was established at LMU, 79 JU students and staff had already visited LMU. CIH is funded by the Exceed programme of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in Berlin and the DAAD.

With the advent of CIH, two master’s programmes were implemented at JU:

  • MSc in Integrated Clinical and Community Mental Health (MICCMH, since January 2010) and
  • MSc in Health Professions Education (MHPE, in 2016).

CIH has implemented a PhD programme in Medical Research – International Health at LMU, which has had many successful graduates from JU. A fellowship programme in paediatric surgery was implemented at JU with the support of CIH. The JU-LMU collaboration now focuses on One Health, medical education, global mental health, and infectious diseases and tropical medicine. An African Medical Education and Research (AMEAR) programme, funded by Bavarian State Chancellery,  supports graduates with funding for their projects since 2020.
