MoU signed between Jimma University and McMillan Stewart Foundation

In a significant step towards strengthening Jimma University’s Autonomous Initiative, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Jimma University (JU) and McMillan Stewart Foundation (Non-Profit Organization based in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A). The MoU was signed by Jimma University President Dr. Jemal Abafita and President of McMillan Stewart Foundation, Mr. Kibebe Gizaw in a ceremony held on February 24, 2023.

The MoU aims to provide scholarship support for students studying agriculture and public health at Jimma University. The president of MSF has expressed his excitement about the agreement, stating that it marks an important milestone in the relationship between the two organizations.

Dr. Jemal on his part stated that “the Genevieve McMillan-Reba Stewart Endowed Scholarship Fund -JU, which we launch today, for establishing a scholarship scheme, is the first of its kind that paves the way for many similar funds to help JU with its initiative to be an autonomous university in the years ahead.

The signing of the MoU is part of a broader effort to establish an endowment fund known as the Genevieve McMillan – Reba Stewart Endowed Scholarship Fund which will be established with a commitment of US$115.000 (roughly 6 million Birr).

Overall, the signing of the MoU between Jimma University and McMillan Stewart Foundation is a positive development for both organizations, as it will foster greater collaboration in education and strengthen ties between both organizations.

The Geneviève McMillan-Reba Stewart Foundation was established in 2001 to realize the vision of its founder, Geneviève McMillan (1922-2008), and to commemorate the life and work of her friend, the artist Reba Stewart (1930-1971).
