Jimma University Establishes Partnership with Peking University.

A delegation from Jimma University(JU) to China, led by Dr. Jemal Abafita, the President of JU, visited Peking University’s (PKU) National School of Development and Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development (NSSCD).

The delegates discussed with the team of professors and directors, including the Associate Dean for Education, Research, and International Cooperation in the presence of representatives from the Embassy of Ethiopia including the Public Diplomacy Officer of the Ethiopian Embassy in China.

During the meeting, the Peking University team provided an overview of the academic and research areas of the two institutions of PKU and expressed a keen interest in collaborating with JU and Ethiopia to contribute to development initiatives such as staff capacity development, academic exchange, joint research, and leadership training among others.

Dr. Jemal personally thanked the esteemed professors who had previously visited Ethiopia and expressed his gratitude for their presence and briefly introduced Jimma University.

Jimma University’s commitment to internationalization was emphasized, with a focus on becoming a fully-fledged autonomous research university. The collaboration aims to tap into the Chinese scientific community, particularly within Peking University’s National School of Development and Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development (NSSCD), with plans to expand into various areas such agriculture and environment related areas.

Jimma University’s unique educational philosophy was acknowledged as offering attractive opportunities for Chinese higher education institutions.

The visit of Jimma University officials to PKU signifies a strong commitment to bolstering internationalization efforts.

The visit and subsequent meetings have led to a fruitful institutional collaboration between JU and PKU. Accordingly, starting from the next academic year, PKU will initiate the admission of Jimma University staff into a range of postgraduate programs, solidifying the partnership.
