Initiative Launched to Bring Pediatric Cancer Care Closer to Families in Ethiopia through Health Worker Training

Jimma University Medical Center (JUMC), in collaboration with other university hospitals (Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, St. Paul Hospital Millennium Medical College, and University of Gondar Hospital), has developed a decentralized satellite clinic initiative to bring pediatric cancer care closer to patients in Ethiopia.

Through this initiative, the aim is to open nine pediatric oncology satellite clinics in major hospitals located in Oromia (Metu, Wollega, Adama, Haramaya, Ambo), Amhara (Bahir Dar, Dessie), Sidama (Hawassa CSH), and the Southwest region (Bonga CH).

The initiative is financially supported by the Foundation S, The Sanofi Collective, and the Aslan project, with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and regional health bureaus being key stakeholders.

Dr. Ahmed Zeynudin, Chief Executive Director of JU Institute of Health, stated that this initiative, launched to bring pediatric cancer care closer to Ethiopian families through health worker training and establishing pediatric oncology satellite clinics, is part of a collective national effort to increase access and quality care for underprivileged children and parents. It is an innovative effort believed to improve adherence, retention, and outcomes for patients while reducing the financial and psychosocial burden on families. He expressed gratitude to the Foundation S, The Sanofi Collective, and The Aslan project for their financial support, as well as the Ministry of Health and regional health bureaus for their partnership and endorsement.

Dr. Diriba Fufa, the principal investigator of the project, emphasized, “The satellite clinic is a breakthrough step to increase the accessibility of childhood cancer treatment and care for needy children and parents in Ethiopia, believed to decrease the treatment abandonment of children affected by cancer due to the distance of the cancer treatment centers.” The satellite clinic will provide follow-up cancer care and treatment for children under the mentorship of senior pediatric oncologists in Ethiopia.

As part of this effort, the first round of two-week training programs for healthcare workers (Pediatricians and Nurses) from nine hospitals launched at Jimma University Medical Center (JUMC), Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, St. Paul Hospital Millenium Medical College (SPHMMC), and University of Gondar Hospital (UoGH).
