Hospital partnership on Antimicrobial Resistance and Pandemic Preparedness workshop

The Hospital partnership on Antimicrobial Resistance and Pandemic Preparedness Annual Review Meeting workshop was held at Jimma University on October-24-25, 2023. This workshop was organized by Jimma University and Arsi University in collaboration with Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich/LMU/, and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU).
The main objective of the workshop was to foster partnership to combat the emergency of antimicrobial resistance and enhance pandemic preparedness in Africa.
Dr. Jemal Abafita, President of Jimma University, delivered a keynote speech at the workshop. He said that the discovery of antibiotics in the 20th century has transformed medical practices and it resulted in dramatic reduction in mortality from infections, saving millions of lives worldwide.
Dr. Jemal added that, AMR is not considered as a clear and present danger to health development and prosperity of the world and the Annual Review Meeting workshop helps strengthen the Hospital partnership on Antimicrobial Resistance and Pandemic Preparedness between partners.
Professor Esayas Kebede, a researcher on infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance at Jimma Medical Center, and one of the panelists, highlighted that the COMBAT-AMR is a network of various African and German University Hospitals aimed to combat the impact of antimicrobial resistance and enhance pandemic preparedness in Africa.
Participants from University of Oslo, EPHI, FMoH, GIZ, LMU, Arsi University, HHU, SPHMMC, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Liberia, Rwanda, Botswana presented about expanding DHIS2-based AMR surveillance in Africa, Ethiopian National AMR strategy, AMR surveillance tool in Ethiopia beyond WHONET, GIZ partnership program and it’s support to COMBAT AMR and AMR tackling GIZ programs in Liberia, Molecular diagnosis and surveillance Networks, public health emergency operation center during COVID-19 the experience of Jimma, AMR research data from Jimma and Asella, Sepsis in Africa, Adult and pediatric patients, and all the COMBAT AMR partner sites experience and their performances.
