January 3-5, 2020: The Department of Ophthalmology at Jimma Medical Center (Hospital) conducted a three days campaign targeted at giving a voluntary eye care services to the community in South West Ethiopia. Out of the patients who visited the eye clinic 118 received a free cataract removal surgery some of which had bilateral problems for years. Some of the beneficiaries were unable to see for more than five years and witnessed that they were dependent on their family members for every daily activity. Following the surgeries, they expressed their gratitude to the department and the team who arranged the free service and devoted their time and energy to give the beneficiaries back their light. Beyond giving the patients their light back, the medical team’s contribution extends to their family who have been busy supporting the patients as it helps them to use their time to engage in productive activities.

JU’s Ophthalmology Department (JUOD) is known for its Outreach services (comprehensive eye care service including cataract) at the hospitals and the department has been conducting such campaign for the fifth round. Jimma University extends its appreciation to the Department for rendering voluntary service to the needy community and encourages others to engage in similar activities.
