Discussion forum held between Jimma University and UNFPA for years of partnership

In a significant development, Jimma University and UNFPA recently engaged in a fruitful discussion forum aimed at strengthening their bilateral relationship and collaboration in the areas of maternal health and sexual and reproductive health. The objective of the forum was to reflect on past achievements and engage in meaningful discussions regarding future activities.
Dr. Jemal Abafita, President of Jimma University, expressed his gratitude to UNFPA for its valuable material, financial contributions, and compassionate support, which played a crucial role in reducing the number of obstetric fistula cases in South West Ethiopia. Dr. Jemal emphasized that the discussion held during the forum served as a platform to consolidate previous achievements and enhance the collaboration for future plans, ultimately leading to improved sexual and reproductive health services for the community.
During the event, Dr. Demisew Amenu presented an activity report highlighting the major accomplishments of Jimma Medical Centre’s fistula care program. He explained that with the financial and material support from UNFPA, over 3000 fistula and pelvic organ prolapse (POP) cases have been successfully addressed. Dr. Demisew also mentioned that over the past 13 years, active screening and referral of obstetric fistula cases have been carried out in the Southwest Ethiopian regions of Oromia, South West Ethiopia, Gambela, as well as South Sudan.
Mr. Taiwo Oluyomi, UNFPA Ethiopia’s Deputy Representative, commended Jimma University for its outstanding humanitarian work, despite limited resources. He expressed UNFPA’s desire to continue collaborating with Jimma University to further improve the quality and services of fistula care.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Ahmed Zenudin emphasized the importance of the day’s discussion in strengthening the partnership between Jimma University and UNFPA. He highlighted the need for expanded capacity building, clinical services, research, community mobilization, and other related services.
As a token of appreciation, Jimma University awarded recognition certificates to UNFPA for their successful collaboration and support in the field of maternal health and sexual and reproductive health programs at the university.
