Collaborative Dental Outreach Brings Free Care to Underserved Communities

In a remarkable display of international cooperation, a team of dental professionals from the United States, South Korea, and MCM Korea Hospital conducted a week-long free dental service campaign at the dental clinic of Jimma University Medical Center (JUMC) from August 19-24, 2024.
The ambitious initiative, which spanned a diverse range of treatments, offered a lifeline to those who might otherwise have limited access to quality oral healthcare. The comprehensive services provided included removable and fixed prostheses, as well as essential cleaning and scaling procedures.
Notably, the outreach program extended its services to include inmates from a local prison, underscoring the team’s commitment to reaching the most vulnerable members of the community.
In addition to the direct patient care, the dental team also dedicated time to conducting skill-transfer sessions with JUMC’s dental interns and residents. This knowledge-sharing component of the initiative is expected to have a lasting impact, as the local practitioners acquire new techniques and expertise to better serve their communities.
