A Delegation from the Austrian Centre for Peace made a visit to Jimma University

A delegation led by Adham Hamed from the Austrian Centre for Peace visited Jimma University from November 20 to November 22, 2023. The purpose of the visit was to engage potential international partners and explore collaboration opportunities to revive the university capacities in Stadtschlaining, Austria. Stadtschlaining was home to the European Peace University until 2014, and the Austrian team aims to revive its academic tradition through a participatory process with stakeholders.

During the visit, discussions were held on the joint concept note for establishing a Centre for Peace and Conflict Transformation in the Horn of Africa. This concept note has been developed collaboratively since 2020 and is an integral part of Jimma University’s proposed Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies.
The delegation met with Professor Netsanet Workneh, Vice President for Research and Community Services, to emphasize Jimma University’s commitment to supporting collaboration in peace and conflict research, training, and outreach initiatives.

Two workshops were conducted during the visit. The first workshop targeted senior and relevant faculty involved in capacity building in Peace and Conflict Studies. The second workshop focused on graduate students specializing in research related to peace and conflict. The workshops included presentations on the Austrian Centre for Peace, ongoing activities for the establishment of the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at Jimma University, and discussions on challenges in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.

The workshops also addressed the needs of international students and curriculum development, as well as the importance of sensitivity to gender and diversity within a diverse student body.
