 EDUCATION

Prof. Tsige Ketema was born on 12 March, 1978 at Diksis/Hamda town of Arsi Zone, Oromia Regional State. She has attended her Elementary and Junior Secondary School at Diksis Primary and Junior Secondary School; and Higher Secondary School at Robe Didea Senior Secondary School. Having completed her secondary education, she joined tertiary education where she received her Diploma in Biology from Jimma Teachers’ Education College and Bachelor Degree in Biology from Jimma University (2005). Right after her first degree graduation, she pursued her postgraduate study at Addis Ababa University and received Master of Science Degree in Biology (Biomedical Sciences) in 2008. After some years of services both in academics and administration, Prof. Tsige Ketema joined doctoral program at Jimma University for her terminal degree and received a PhD Degree in Environmental Health in 2015. 

 Professional Honors/Awards/Grants 

During her tenure, Prof. Tsige Ketema has won many research grants and fellowship awards, notably: WHO/TDR/Clinical Research and Development Fellowship at Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), Spain (February, 2020 – January, 2021); DAAD-DIES ProGrant fellowship, Nairobi, Kenya (2016); DAAD-in-Country Scholarship (2013-2015); L’Oréal UNESCO Regional Fellowship for Women in Science in Sub-Saharan Africa, Johannesburg, South Africa (2012); Certificate of Awards of  an Outstanding Researcher at Jimma University, Ministry of Science and Higher Education (2019); Certificate of Best Academic and Research Performing Postgraduate student, Addis Ababa University (2008); Pin Award of Best Performing Undergraduate student, Jimma University (2005).

 Research and publication

Prof. Tsige Ketema has very good research track and keen interest on Biomedical Science researches particularly on Malaria: P. vivax malaria parasite, neglected burdens in resource limited regions with special emphasis on its epidemiology, anti-malarial drug efficacy evaluation, severe life threatening symptoms associated to malaria parasite, clinical research and development, impact of human behavior and customs on malaria immunity and infection outcomes. To date, she managed to author and co-author more than 35 peer reviewed research articles, a book chapter, modules, proceedings, and commentary.

 Academic/Institutional Contributions

Prof. Tsige Ketema has served at Jimma University at different capacity: as Technical assistant (1999-2001), Graduate assistant (2005-2006), Lecturer (2008- 2012), Assistant Professor (2012 -2015), and Associate Professor (2015-2020). In addition to offering various biomedical courses, conducting research, and supervising postgraduate students research, she has been engaged in many institutional activities serving as  Vice President for Research and Community Services of Jimma University (2016-to-January, 2020); Coordinator of Research and Postgraduate studies of College of Natural Sciences (2015); Gender officer of College of Natural Sciences, Jimma University (2010); Chairperson of committee for the development five years’ Strategic Plan (2016-2020) for Research and Technology Transfer  of Jimma University (2016); Chairperson of a committee who organized JU-GKEN Annual Research Conferences  held at Jimma University and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (2019); Steering Committee member and Chairperson for Scientific sub-committee of International Oromo Studies for three consecutive years (2017-2019); Assistant editor of Gadaa Journal hosted by Jimma University; Organizer and facilitator of training for Women Academia on Grant proposal Writing and Publication, held at Jimma University (2017); Chairperson and facilitator for Annual Research Conferences held at Jimma University for three consecutive years (2017-2019), developed different teaching modules and laboratory manuals for the undergraduate program of Department of Biology; member of Discipline Committee of College of Natural Sciences; Stream leader for Parasitology and Immunology unit of Department of Biology. Prof. Tsige Ketema has supervised and supervising research of more than 20 MSc students doing their research in area of Biomedical Sciences and related fields.

 Community Services

Among the major community services delivered/being delivered by Prof. Tsige Ketema are: Co-trainer for Ethiopian Higher Education Leadership Management (EtHELM) in collaboration with Center for Higher Education for Policy Studies (CHEPS) of Netherland and Center for Higher Education Studies of Germany (June, 2018-to-date); Board member of Mizan Tepi University (2017-to-date); Member of National Research Council of Ministry of Science and Technology of Ethiopia (2017-2018); Member of Agricultural Research Council of Ethiopia (2017-2019); Member of Steering Committee for International and National Conferences organized or co-organized by Jimma University (2016-2019); Steering Committee member of  conference organized on Finance Summit, held at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (2017-2019);  Steering Committee member of a conference organized on Road Safety, held at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (2017-2019); Organizer and facilitator for Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology in Africa (OFAB), Jimma University as a hub for Southwest Ethiopia (2017); Coordinated, supervised and facilitated all funded (internal and external) and university supported community service projects in her capacity as Vice President for Research and Community Services of Jimma University (2016-2019).
