Personal profile:
Dr Gemechis File Duressa was born on 21st June 1979 at former Eastern Wollega Zone and presently known as Horo Guduru Wollega Zone of Oromia, Ethiopia. He attended his school education at Achane Primary, Fincha Junior Secondary, and Shambu Senior Secondary Schools. He received a B.Ed. degree in Mathematics from Bahir Dar University in 2001; MSc and MA degrees in Mathematics; and Higher Education Management and Policy from Addis Ababa University in 2006 and 2011 respectively. He received his PhD in Mathematics from National Institute of Technology Warangal, India in 2014.
Research and publications:
His research interests span on the areas of numerical solution of differential equations, mainly, on singularly perturbed ordinary and partial differential equations. One of the remarkable achievements in his publication is its contribution of several techniques from analytical to numerical point of view to the area, and show the application of Mathematics in different fields. So far, he published more than 80 research articles in national and international reputable journals of which 60 are since his last promotion to Associate Professor. In addition he made numerous contributions in serving as reviewer, assistant editor and editor for various national and international Journals.
Teaching and student supervision:
He has 19 years of service of which 14 years are in Jimma University in different capacities as Lecturer, Assistant Professor, and Associate Professor. He offered and being offering various mathematics courses for UG, PG and PhD students at JU and sister Universities in the country. So far, he has supervised 28 MSc and 3 PhD graduates to completion and currently supervising 2 MSc students and 6 PhD scholars. Moreover, he served at different administrative positions as head of the department, vice dean of the faculty, director for continuing and distance education; and coordinator for research and postgraduate programs. Currently, he is serving as the dean of the college of Natural Sciences.
Community services and engagements:
He served at national, regional and local in different capacities, to mention some, as a senior researcher of the national education roadmap development; the curriculum framework developer for secondary school teachers’ education; leader for the four years BSc science programs curriculum development; and trainer of the education roadmap for Jimma town education leaders and administrators, and academic staff of Dambi Dollo University. He also served as a board member of JUCS and the Ethiopian Space Science Society; critical reviewer of various research projects; and an external reviewer of PhD Curriculum at various Universities. In addition, he successfully coordinated community service project (with three different subprojects) developed for the benefit the community; actively coordinated and delivered mathematics tutorial to secondary school students in Jimma town and zone; and actively engaged in the enhancement of Jimma JU female students’ educational performance in collaboration with gender and youth affairs directorate office.
