School of Pharmacy was established in September 1985 under the auspices of the former Jimma Institute of Health Sciences. School Pharmacy was the first in giving a regular pharmacy diploma course in the country. The aim of the training was to produce mid- level pharmacy professionals who will take part in teaching the community in proper use of drugs and render pharmaceutical services. The diploma course was among the top rated courses. Beside the regular program, the School was offering a diploma course in the evening class as of September 1997.  The School also has an experience in teaching junior pharmacy technicians at a certificate level. In line with the training philosophy of the University, teaching in the School accommodates adequate practical exposure in health institutions and community settings. Thereafter, a Bachelor degree training was commenced in the school in regular (commenced in 2001), extension (commenced in 2004) and summer (commenced in 2006). Later on, the curriculum of bachelor degree in Pharmacy was modified with the intention of arming students with clinical knowledge, and the first batch of patient oriented-Pharmacists were graduated in 2013. At postgraduate level, currently the school hosts one PhD program (PhD in Pharmaceutical sciences) and three Masters of Science (MSc) Programs [MSc in clinical pharmacy (commenced in 2009 G.C), MSc in pharmaceutical supply chain management (commenced in 2013), and MSc in Pharmaceutical quality assurance and regulatory affairs (commenced in 2014)].
