Background
Emergency medicine is a distinct specialty which deals with the care of the acutely sick or injured patient. It is a field of practice based on the knowledge and skills required for the prevention, diagnosis and management of acute and urgent aspects of illness and injury affecting patients of all age groups with a full spectrum of episodic undifferentiated physical and behavioral disorders;pre hospital and in hospital emergency medical system
The practice of Emergency Medicine in an organized form as a unit with specialists in the field began in 2015 G.C. A year later developed to an Academic Department teaching residents and interns from other departments. In 2019 G.C residency program is established and it’s the 3rd in Ethiopia after Black lion (2010) and St paul (2015) and 1st out of the capital.
As of 2025, 22 graduates have succesfully graduated and working in reputable universities and hospitals

Objectives
General objective:
This graduate program is to produce a proficient emergency and critical care specialist who can lead the management of the undifferentiated and unscheduled acutely ill or injured patient of all spectrum; design an emergency /critical care system, engage in problem solving research, advise and advocate on policy issues through self-directed competency based learning in an intensively supervised program in a milieu of patient centered high standard continually improving practice
Specific obectives:
To employ pertinent methods of prioritization, assessment, intervention, resuscitation, and further management of patients of all age categories who come with emergency condition.
To enable trainees practice evidence-based medicine.
To enable trainees to do quality improvement activities in Prehospital care and become a pillar in EMS development.
To enable trainees to Provide medical consultancy for Emergency and intensive Care Unit designing.
To enable trainees to raise and conduct problem solving research and contribute to the field.
To enable trainees to do disaster preparedness and response plan and leads disaster response team
