It was organized as a department in 1986 and started clinical specialty in Obstetrics and gynecology in 2004. The department has a department council and makes regular meetings at least monthly.
The department provides both outpatient and inpatient services at advanced level. The outpatient department services consist of general Gynecology clinics, Antenatal care clinics and Family planning clinics as well as referral clinics for sub-specialty units in Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery (URPS), Gynecologic Oncology, Feto-maternal Medicine (FMM) and Endocrinology and Infertility.
The department has already started and running subspecialty training in Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery since September 2016 and graduated the first batch of five subspecialists. In addition, Gynecologic Oncology and Feto-maternal Medicine subspecialty training is also started and underway. Since 0ctober 2020, we have started advanced minimal access surgery in collaboration with Chirurige Solidare (Society of laparoscopic surgeons of France). The future plan of the department is to increase its capacity to train more clinical specialists and subspecialists in the field, create more academic and research links in the department so as to strengthen different levels of studies and make the department the center of excellence in service provision, teaching and research in the country and beyond.
