1.2 REGULAR BA PROGRAM
1.2.1. OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF AFAN OROMO AND LITERATURE
The Afan Oromo department needs to create language experts that have reliable knowledge about the language and its society. The department also needs them to be aware of language and culture. Modern issues regarding language like multilingualism and bilingualism, cross-cultural communication, mass communication, public relations, etc are also emphasized to enable the candidates gain general knowledge about the language.
The Specific Objectives ofthe department are:
· To produce qualified professionals who can serve as researcher, public relation officer, news reporter, editor, translator, artist, etc.
· To coordinate various researches conducted in and/or on Afan-Oromo
· To conduct different community based projects in collaboration with independently or in collaboration with the institutions
· To conduct training and workshops for further advancement of the language and, take part in community based development activities
· To carry out research activities to standardize Afan Oromo
· To offer quality courses that can enable students ready for various occupational purposes
1.2.2. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The Afan Oromo and Literature department needs students who:
v would successfully complete the preparatory program
v have fitting result in the higher education entrance examination
v have good a command of Afan Oromo
v have an interest in studying the Oromo language and culture in general
v Could suit the general admission requirements of the University.
1.2.3. DURATION OF THE STUDY
The Afan Oromo and Literature program will take three year duration to be completed at a regular program.
1.2.4. GRADUATE PROFILE
After the successful completion of the program, the Afan Oromo and literature graduates are expected to have sufficient opportunities for employment in governmental, non-governmental and private institutions.
v Have comprehensive and specialized academic knowledge in depth in Afan Oromo and literature.
v Have adequate knowledge of language characteristics and literature in general and Afan Oromo language and literature in particular.
v Have adequate knowledge and understanding of Oromo socio-cultural background.
v Manifest commitment, determination and full responsibility to enrich Afan Oromo in particular, and the Oromo culture and history in general.
v Be capable of organizing information in a very coherent and cohesive way.
v Have the capability to effectively communicate, organize news and reports for different mass-medias.
v Have the mental and social maturity to discharge their civic responsibilities.
v Have personal, social and professional competency to better contribute to the socio-economic and cultural development efforts of the society.
v Prepare literary materials, work as literary critic showing the value of various texts of prose and poetry;
v Collect and document literary and oral genres;
v Participate in editing activities;
v Write reports, Prepare brochures, newsletters, press release speeches
1.2.5. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
The graduates must fulfill the following requirements:
ü A cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.00.
ü A major GPA of 2.00
ü Completion of a total of 190 ECTS
ü No “F” grade.
ü A senior essay write-up as a partial fulfillment for the requirement of BA degree.
ü Minimum ‘C’ grade in senior essay(SRP) and CBTP
1.2.6. DEGREE NOMENCLATURE
The degree for graduates of the department shall be named as:
“Bachelor of Arts Degree in Afan Oromo and Literature” which has an equivalent meaning in Afan Oromo “Digrii Baachilarii Aartii Afaan Oromoofi Og-Barruutiin”
