Objectives of the program:
- To produce specialized professionals who can handle competently issues related to epidemiological methods and designs in tackling the health problems of the nation;
- To produce professionals who can undertake surveillance activities and manage epidemic conditions;
- To minimize the shortage of competent researchers, teachers, managers and team leaders in the service and training institutions.
Admission Requirements:
The prospective candidate for Master of Public health in Epidemiology must have a Doctorate degree in Medicine or at least a Bachelor degree in Health related professions (Public Health, Nurse, Environmental Health, Laboratory Technology, Biology, Statistics, Demography and others). In addition, he/she have to fulfill the requirements of the School of Graduate Studies of the University which include:
- A minimum of 2 year services in relevant field
- Any one who has interest in the field of the profession
- Who passed the entrance examination of the University
- Who can provide evidence of sponsorship and recommendations from his/her employee and academic professors
- Fulfill other relevant Criteria required by the University
Duration of Study:
The Master of Public Health in Epidemiology will take two years in five semesters considering the summer season as one semester. To complete this program a student is expected to take at least 40 credit hours and do independent research.
Graduate Profile:
- Exercise theoretical and practical application of basic and advanced epidemiology and biostatistics
- Identify public health problems pertinent to the population
- Establish/Conduct Surveillance and use Surveillance Data for public health action
- Conduct epidemiological research on priority health problems and disseminate the findings to policy makers
- Communicating and Promoting the effective use of epidemiologic data to guide public health practice and Policy
- Apply principles of good ethical/legal practice as they relate to study design and data collection, dissemination and use
- Create Partnership with different stakeholders as epidemiology is a cross cutting issue
- Practice effective leadership and resource management skills
- Address cross cutting issues like HIV/AIDs, gender, disaster management and environment protection
Graduation Requirements:
Students are required to meet the following requirements in order to be eligible for the award of the Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology.
- Successful completion of both theoretical and field attachment courses.
- An over all CGPA of at least 3.00.
- Score of D or F in any course is not acceptable at any time and should be cleared before graduation.
- Defending and obtaining a minimum score of “B” grade in thesis work.
- Meet all other requirements of Jimma University.
