About the department
Currently, the Department of Psychology is one of the four departments under the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences. It was established in 2003 (1995 E.C.) as one of the departments under the Faculty of Education and later became part of the College of Social Sciences and Law until July 2014.
The department has been offering both BA and MA programs through regular and summer modalities. Over the past decade, more than 1,550 students have graduated from the department through regular and extension programs. These graduates are currently serving in various regions and sectors across the country in diverse professional fields. Many of them have also continued their education at the master’s and doctoral levels, both in Ethiopia and abroad.
Recently, the department launched seven postgraduate programs: MA in Counseling Psychology, MA in Educational Psychology with a specialization in Measurement and Evaluation, MA in Child and Adolescent Development, MA in Social Psychology, MA in Child Care Education, PhD in Educational Psychology, and PhD in Counseling Psychology.
At both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the Department of Psychology aims to produce competent and well-trained professionals who can effectively apply psychological principles, concepts, theories, and practices to meet the needs of governmental, non-governmental, and private organizations. The department is also committed to conducting high-quality research on psychological, educational, and social issues affecting the community and providing professional services to individuals, institutions, and groups on matters related to psychology.
To achieve these objectives, the department recognizes the importance of adequate resources and facilities. Accordingly, it has equipped itself with qualified academic staff possessing diverse specializations and academic ranks, including 2 Professors, 2 Associate Professors, 5 PhD holders, 7 PhD candidates, 8 Assistant Professors, and 8 MA holders.
