Offers Entomology and related courses at higher learning institutions

    • Identifies pertinent community problems and seeks practical solution to the problems of agricultural pests and vectors of human and animal diseases.
    • Develops and executes proposals and projects, and designs programs and interventions in his/her field of specialization
    • Provides advice and consultancy service to government, non-government and private sectors on biological issues.
    • Serve as an agent of change in matters related to insects and related arthropods.
    • Facilitates the link between higher institutions, communities, and other stakeholders towards the common goals of fighting community problems and for sustainable utilization of natural resources.

            PROGRAM PROFILE

 

The MSc program in Applied Entomology is a two years program which emphasizes two areas of specializations: Agricultural/Economical Entomology and Medical & Veterinary Entomology. The program offers training in biology, ecology, taxonomy and management of insects and related arthropods that are important pests of crops and vectors of human and animal diseases. It also trains the beneficial interactions of insects and related arthropods with the environment, ecosystem services and biodiversity. It provides theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in research, conventional and modern techniques in entomology.

                                ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

 A. Candidate should satisfy the following:

 

BSc/B.Ed degree in biology and related disciplines (such as agriculture, horticulture, animal sciences, environmental health, health sciences, etc.) from recognized higher learning institutions)

  1.    Successful performance (i.e. a minimum of 50 %) in the entrance examination; undergraduate cGPA (at least 2:00) accounting for 50% and entrance examination for 50% to be eligible for entry to the program.
  2.  Meet the general JU admission requirements.
  3. If the Department feels that a candidate is deficient in major area in the undergraduate program, bridging courses will be arranged.

 B. Duration of the study program

 

The planned duration of the studies is a minimum of two academic years with a maximum duration of three academic years. A candidate who fails to complete within the set schedule must present an acceptable justification in consultation with his/her research supervisor(s) for possible extension of one or two semesters by graduate council.

 C. Graduation requirements

1. A candidate should have a minimum course work of 30 credit hours and Thesis work of 6 credit hours.
2. A candidate must fulfill the following requirements of the School of Graduate studies (SGS) of Jimma University (JU) for graduation:

      a.  A Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.00 must be obtained in the course work
b. The general JU graduate program graduation requirements need to be fulfilled.
c. A candidate must be rated at least “Satisfactory” in his/her thesis work.  The  student thesis will be rated ¨Excellent¨, ¨Very good¨, ¨Good¨, ¨Satisfactory¨ or

¨Fail¨ by the external and internal examiners. If the student’s thesis is rated “Fail”, he/she may be allowed to re- work for a maximum duration of 6 months.
