Message from the Dean

As dean college of Agriculture & Veterinary Medicine (JUCAVM), I am pleased to welcome prospective students and other website visitors including researchers, guests, alumni, and community members. I believe there has never been a more immediate and priority need than feeding the globally growing world population which necessitated Agricultural Education and Research. For Africa and particularly Ethiopia, agriculture is at the center of development and economic transformation; it is the largest source of GDP, employment, export earnings, and foreign currency. Possibly, it is essential for Africa’s growth, poverty reduction, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

JUCAVM is a pioneer Agricultural Education Training Institute in Ethiopia established in 1952 in collaboration with Oklahoma state university of the United States of America and it enjoys its educational and research legacy as co-founder of Jimma University in 1999. It is committed to advancing agricultural development through training, knowledge generation, and service delivery in the country and beyond.

The mission of the college is to create a learning community in which students at all levels, and teaching staff, can engage in the pursuit of knowledge across and between a broad range of disciplines in agriculture and veterinary medicine. It offers students a wide variety of courses and programs, through its innovative community-based education (CBE).

The college offers both undergraduate and post-graduate programs in various disciplines. It offers training in Horticulture & Plant Sciences, Animal Sciences, Agricultural Economics, Natural Resources Management, Agribusiness and Value Chain Management, Rural Development & Agricultural Extension, Food Science & Technology, Post-harvest Management, and Veterinary Medicine.

We are always committed to satisfying the interest of our customers and are very flexible to the needs of the labor market and industry and run in-service/on-job training, winter (Bega), summer (Kiremt), on location, weekend, and distance programs in addition to regular ones. For instance, in collaboration with the Ethio-Netherlands partnership, Ethiopian Horticulture Agency (EHDA), and Ethiopian Horticulture Producers and Exporters Association (EHPEA), JUCAVM has launched an “Industry Oriented MSc in Horticulture” program.  This program enables us to specifically respond to the training needs of the horticulture industry in the country. The nature of this training program is unique; it creates a flexible new learning environment, which is different from campus-based and distance education.

JUCAVM has a clean and green campus with a beautiful landscape. It is also a place where one can smoothly get internet access through its well-organized wired and wireless network. The educational activities of the college are directed toward effective learning. We have different student support schemes like male and female air beauty salons, shoe cleaners, football and volleyball, ground tennis, and gym facilities.

We have established smart classrooms and e-learning facilities. All classes, seminar and meeting rooms, and auditorium are equipped with LCDs and computers and connected to the internet. We have 24-hour library service for our students. Student and staff notices have been digitized and transmitted via plasmas. The college has established Alumni Association and named a garden after it – “Alumni Garden”.

We have over 100 hectares of research and teaching farms near the campus which also generates income.  The facilities serve as the hub for our teaching and research programs.  We have centers for dairy, poultry, apiculture, agronomy, horticulture, a nursery, modern greenhouses, and laboratories. An exceptional veterinary hospital is being under construction which would help trainees’ experiential learning and our community to ensure the welfare of their animals. Our community outreaches involve the dissemination of poultry chickens, beehives, coffee seeds and seedlings, and different trees from our wide nursery field. In order to concentrate our efforts and bring more impact in community outreach, we have established model/ technology villages in four districts in the Jimma zone and one in Jimma town following the diversified agro-ecologies in the zone. The technology villages are not only hub for our own released technologies, but also where we bring technologies from similar agro-ecologies and introduce them to farmers. We transfer technologies to those villages believing that farmers in other similar agro-ecologies adopt from those villages and multiply the effects.

JUCAVM has strong linkage and cooperation with several public and private institutions and/or universities in the areas of training, research, and community services. The international collaboration we started with Oklahoma state university highly expanded and we have strong linkage with Maastricht School of Management (MSM), Wageningen UR, Radboud University, Van Hall Larenstien University of applied sciences of the Netherlands, Dalhousie & McGill Universities of Canada, Ghent and Leuven universities of Belgium, Kangwon National University (KNU), Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) of South Korea, University of Georgia, Land Institute the USA, International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT, India & West Africa), and Agricultural Research Council (ARC) – South Africa, Kassel University Germany, University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna Austria, Egerton Universities and ICIPE (Kenya), Ebonyi State University Nigeria, University of Abomey-Calavi Benin, University of Yaounde 1 Cameroon, etc. These collaborations helped us to enhance our staff capacity through post-graduate studies, joint research projects, and student exchange and laboratory facility development.  Our future interest is to further expand our international partnerships and collaborations in order to continue as a lead agricultural training and research institute.

I invite you to take a tour of our college’s website and learn more about the exciting academic programs and staff profile, scientific research, and projects.
