Human resources

It is crucial to have a sufficient number of human resources and laboratory facilities to complete all of the program’s academic and practical sessions. All of our human resources have been intimately involved in the activities of all of our programs. Three (3) professors, eight (8) associate professors, eleven (11) assistant professors, eight(8) lecturers, and four(4) laboratory technical assistants work at Jimma University School of Veterinary Medicine, contributing to the existing UG and PG programs.

Facilities

Veterinary Teaching Hospital and Open-air Veterinary Clinic 

The school has a Veterinary Teaching Hospital that is still in the process of being completed. It is divided into the following departments and units.

Laboratories

There are currently five well-equipped and fully functional veterinary laboratories used by staff, postgraduate and undergraduate students to demonstrate practical sessions and undertake quality research.

  • Mastitis and Milk Quality service
  • Parasitology, Pathology, and Histology Laboratory

Animal Farms

Animal farms, including dairy, poultry, swine, sheep and goat farm, and apiculture farms are located on and off-campus and play a key role in the School’s teaching-learning processes.

Services

Community Services of School of Veterinary Medicine

The School of Veterinary Medicine has been rendering community-centered services in rural vicinity and Jimma town. The services include:

  • Diagnostic and treatment services for the sick farms as well as small animals and poultry
  • Surgical and emergency services
  • Vaccination against major livestock diseases
  • Vaccination of companion animals (dogs and cats)
  • Spay-neuter program
  • Professional advice and consultancy services for investors and farm owners.

Veterinary Ambulatory Clinical services

In addition to the provision of veterinary health services to the community, the ambulatory clinical service has been serving and will widen the spectrum of clinical practice education and skill for DVM and MSc veterinary students of the School of Veterinary Medicine.

Activities of the Ambulatory Clinic Service

The ambulatory clinic gives the following services to the community in and around Jimma. In addition to the provision of veterinary health services to the community, the ambulatory clinical service is widen the spectrum of clinical practical education and skill for DVM and MSc veterinary students of the School of Veterinary Medicine

School of Veterinary Medicine is launching ambulatory clinical service.

Area: The service coverage is within 7 km radius of Jimma town.

Location: In JUCAVM Campus

  • On-Call Service

On-call service is given for disease treatment and surgery on an individual and herd basis. Along with full medical services and surgery, the Vet School practice offers year-round, 24-hour emergency coverage.

Mastitis and Milk Quality services

In addition to the services listed above, the Vet. School Milk Quality Laboratory provides bacteriology support and consultation on milk quality problems to farmers in Jimma and will run samples for diagnosis of individual mastitis cases and for herd-based testing.

Technology Villages

Established Technology Village (2019) is the new flagship in excellence areas of the Jimma University, where intensive engagements are being executed in providing agricultural technology and technical assistance to farmers to improve agricultural and livestock production.

  • The establishment of the village is part of the materialization of the new flagship initiative in excellence areas of the University.
  • The areas include excellence in quality healthcare including animal health care, excellence in Technology Transfer, and excellence in Information Revolution.
  • The current establishment is targeted at promoting and disseminating appropriate technologies, encouraging technology start-ups for agriculture and veterinary medicine,
  • Providing necessary infrastructure facilities and other value-added services,
  • Developing a suitable site for on-site training (live-laboratory) for agriculture and veterinary medicine courses.

    • Free access to several international journals through JU-Portal
    • Free access to the hard copies of lecture materials
    • Shared and password-protected personal server for storing files (avoids the use of virus susceptible removable disks).
