LL.M in Commercial and Investment Law

Program Objectives
The main objective of the LL.M in Commercial and Investment Law is to provide postgraduate students with the opportunity for advanced learning on certain key areas of domestic and international commercial and investment law and address gap in qualified human resource on the subject in the country. More specifically, the program aims:
•    To train qualified and competent manpower  and  bridge the prevalent gap in expertise in areas of commercial and investment law in the country
•    To train experts who can assist the formulation and enforcement of governmental policies affecting commerce and investment and provide consultancy services
•    To train experts that facilitate and handle resolution of commercial and investment disputes expediently
•    To ensure continuous injection of high caliber graduates in the market in areas of commercial and investment law
•    To produce graduates who are well equipped to conduct legal research and teach in higher education institutions
•    To create further education opportunities for those who could not have access to the limited higher learning facilities of the government or abroad.
Entry Requirements
Admission is merit based. The program admits students of outstanding intellectual ability who manifest keen inclination in commercial and investment law. In addition to the general requirements put by the school of graduate studies, applicants are required to:
a)    Hold LL.B degree from a recognized university with a minimum CGPA of 2.00. However, women and applicants with physical disability are entitled to a 2% quota seat each up on satisfaction of the minimum eligibility criteria. They shall also be preferred in the event of equal achievement with able bodied and male competitors. Competition for the quota among those entitled shall be merit based. Eligible applicants with formidable research achievements and work experience in the field of commercial and investment law will be preferred. The school council shall decide on merits of their achievement and the extent of weight to be given.
b)    Be proficient in English language. This should be measured by passing English test.
c)    Pass an entrance exam prepared and administered by the school;
The school shall prepare guideline on the weight to be given to CGPA and entrance exam result.
The Masters of Laws in Commercial and Investment Laws is designed to achieve mastery of content, acquisition of skills and the development of desirable attributes in the area of Commercial and Investment Law. Learning experiences and marketable skills are incorporated into the program to bring about these desired outcomes, and assessment is designed to ensure that students have the opportunity to demonstrate their achievement. The program is distinguished from other LL.M programs in the country in that it combines the two closely related but distinct areas of commercial and investment laws. The graduates will have a mastery of both the theoretical foundation of commerce and investment as well as their public and private regulatory aspects. The graduates will thus have a timely contribution in terms of entrenching the knowledge and skills of policy design and analysis, research and development, regulation and adjudication in the increasing commercial and investment relations happening in Ethiopia with distinct sense of competence and character.
