Admission Period

Admission to a Doctoral program can take place twice (first or second semester) in an Ethiopian academic calendar.

  Admission Requirements

A candidate applying for a Doctoral program in Materials Science and Engineering should:

  1. have a master’s or equivalent degree in related fields from a recognized higher learning institution AND,
  2. provide recommendation letters from two academic referee or from his/her organization, a motivation letter, and a Doctoral research concept paper AND,
  3. have a CGPA of 3.00 or higher and a masters’ thesis rated as ‘good’ or higher or equivalent a AND,
  4. provide a signed sponsorship letter if sponsored by an organization or provide a proof of financial capability (minimum of 75,000.00 ETB) for the educational payments if self-sponsored AND,
  5. present a concept note to the Department Graduate council (DGC), followed by an interview and entrance examination based on the requirements stipulated in the curriculum AND,
  6. An applicant whose medium of instruction of previous studies is not in English, should bear a minimum of 6.0 in IELTS or equivalent TOFL result.

*For admission into doctoral programs without coursework, two publications in reputable journal is a minimum requirement (i.e., two publication 5%, and 3 and above numbers of publication 10%).

Admission procedures

  1. Announcement for applicant will be made through advertisement by the university registrar two months ahead of date of admission
  2. The applications along with the necessary documents shall be submitted to the university registrar office.
  3. The assessment of the applications for admission to the program shall be made by the (DGC) and must ensure the assignment of a doctoral supervisor for successful candidates.
  4. The admission of successful candidates will be endorsed by academic commission of the respective college/institute/and the university registrar or its delegate shall grant the student an admission letter (Appendix 1)
  5. The candidate must have a Doctoral supervisor before registering formally by following the university registration procedures on date specified by the university registrar.
  6. Registration period of students from other doctoral program modalities such as joint/dual degree programs, sandwich programs and GKEN may be flexibly entertained depending on the candidate’s visit to the partner Institution and other unforeseen administrative difficulties

2. Special Considerations 

    • The program is committed to supporting in-region students and marginalized groups, including refugees. The application process is structured to accommodate these groups, with specific support services and outreach initiatives in place.
    • Flexibility in application deadlines and additional guidance is provided to ensure equal access to the program.
    • Language requirement might be waived for deserving applicant

3. Organizational Structure:

    • The program spans four years (eight semesters), with an option to extend by 1-2 years based on justifiable reasons and with the recommendation of the supervisor(s).
    • The curriculum includes core, elective, and bridging courses, followed by a research project that is integral to the completion of the degree.
    • The mode of delivery combines lectures, tutorials, laboratory practices, and research work, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience.
