Our Global Connections

Currently, 15 of our staff members are actively pursuing their PhDs across the globe, and they are at various stages of completion at different universities in India, Belgium, Poland, South Korea, Nigeria, and Germany, with many due to return soon. This international presence not only enhances their expertise but also brings diverse perspectives and insights back to our faculty.

In addition to our dedicated staff, the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering engages in numerous collaborations with a wide range of professionals, both nationally and internationally. The PhD program in Materials Science and Engineering at Jimma University boasts strong international and local partnerships that enrich the academic experience and broaden research opportunities.

  1. International Collaboration:
    • The program has established Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) India. These partnerships enable joint supervision of PhD students and facilitate short-term visits for students to access advanced research facilities in India. Over the past seven years, 25 students have benefited from these collaborations, gaining exposure to cutting-edge technologies and global research standards.
  2. Local Expertise and Co-Supervision:
    • The program actively involves experts in Materials Science and Engineering from other Ethiopian universities and the Ministry of Innovation and Technology as co-supervisors and guest lecturers, ensuring that students receive a diverse and comprehensive education. This collaboration also strengthens the network between Jimma University and other academic institutions within Ethiopia, fostering a collaborative research environment.
  3. International Student Support:
    • Dedicated support structures are in place to assist international students, ensuring they integrate smoothly into the academic and social life at Jimma University. This includes tailored academic advising, cultural orientation, and access to research facilities both locally and internationally.
