University Sports Festival Concludes with Jimma University as Overall Champion

The Ethiopian Universities Sports Festival, which celebrated Ethiopian unity, solidarity, and fraternity, concluded today after 15 consecutive days of competitions hosted by Jimma University. The tournament brought together more than 5,000 students from 47 universities who competed fiercely across 15 different sports.

 

On the closing day, Deputy Minister of Education Kora Tushune stated that the government is committed to nurturing a generation that excels both academically and physically. He emphasized the importance of such platforms in building capable and well-rounded citizens.

            

Dr. Jemal Abafita, President of Jimma University, highlighted that higher education institutions serve as a microcosm of Ethiopia and play a key role in demonstrating the values of unity and cooperation in practice.

Abay Belayehun, President of the Ethiopian Universities Sports Association, noted that the festival revealed talented athletes with the potential to represent Ethiopia on international stages.

      

In the football finals, the Ethiopian Defense University triumphed over Wachemo University in the men’s category, while Debre Berhan University claimed victory against Hawassa University in the women’s category both matches decided by penalty shootouts.

Trophies were awarded to winning institutions in each sport category, with host Jimma University emerging as the overall champion of the tournament.

   

The festival closed on a historic note, celebrated for promoting teamwork, excellence, and national pride among Ethiopia’s university youth.
