The Ethiopian Society for Microbiology (ESM) officially opened its 8th Annual Conference yesterday at Jimma University. The two-day event, taking place from March 13–14, 2026, has brought together the nation’s leading experts in microbial science to discuss the field’s critical role in national development and global resilience. The conference, co-hosted by Jimma University, was inaugurated with a focus on this year’s theme: “Microbial Innovations for Health, Sustainability, and Global Resilience.”
In his welcoming address, Dr. Tesfaye Alemu, President of the ESM, highlighted the expanding relevance of microbiology beyond the laboratory. He noted that the chosen theme reflects the science’s growing importance in solving some of the world’s most pressing issues, from public health threats to food security and environmental degradation.“Microorganisms are often unseen, but their impact on our lives is immense,” Dr. Alemu stated. “This conference serves as a crucial platform for Ethiopian scientists to share knowledge and chart a path forward, ensuring we harness microbial innovations to build a healthier and more sustainable future for our nation.”
Representing the host institution, Professor Muluemebet Abera, Vice President for Research and Partnership at Jimma University, delivered a strong message on the power of scientific community. She urged researchers to move beyond individual discovery and strengthen collaboration, mentorship, and community networks to tackle complex challenges like antimicrobial resistance and emerging infectious diseases. “Science advances not only through sophisticated laboratories and high-impact publications, but through the collective effort of a strong and supportive scientific community,” Professor Abera said. She specifically commended the contributions of young researchers, emphasizing that their fresh perspectives and energy are vital for confronting the environmental and health challenges of tomorrow. The significance of the event is further underscored by the support of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). This international collaboration highlights a shared global commitment to advancing microbiological research and fostering innovation that transcends borders.
The 8th ESM Annual Conference at Jimma University is expected to feature a series of presentations, panel discussions, and networking sessions aimed at strengthening Ethiopia’s capacity in microbiological research and its application for the public good.
