The Pilot Fish Farming Project in Seka Chekorsa District of Jimma Zone has officially concluded and has been handed over to local authorities. This initiative, a collaboration between Pastoralist Concern (PC) and Jimma University (JU), was funded by Spanish cooperation and aimed at enhancing local fish farming practices while improving community livelihoods.
The project included several key activities designed to empower local farmers and promote sustainable aquaculture. The PC managed the implementation, provided essential resources, organized training sessions, and effectively managed the budget. In parallel, Jimma University offered vital technical support, monitored progress, and conducted specialized training on topics such as homemade fish feed preparation, pond management, fish harvesting, and cooking demonstrations.
Among the project’s notable achievements, participants received practical training in preparing homemade fish feed, managing ponds, and harvesting fish effectively. Cooking demonstrations were also held to highlight the nutritional benefits of fish. The project facilitated the preparation and distribution of homemade fish feed while supplying commercial feed to local cooperatives. Comparative evaluations of homemade versus commercial fish feed were conducted, along with baseline and rapid market surveys to analyze local market dynamics. A small-scale fish farming module was developed in Afan Oromo to ensure accessibility for local farmers.
The initiative has directly benefited 27 participants who are now actively involved in fish farming. The Pastoralist Concern provided three small-scale pellet machines to two farmer groups and Jimma University, enhancing local production capabilities.
The successful handover of this project marks a significant advancement toward sustainable aquaculture development in Seka Chekorsa District, equipping local farmers with the necessary tools and knowledge to thrive in the fish farming sector.
