Reviving Oral Traditions: Youth-Centric Storytelling Initiative for Crisis Management

Jimma University (Ethiopia) is collaborating with Ghent University, Howest University of Applied Sciences (Belgium), and the University of Nairobi (Kenya) on a project titled “Storytelling and Young People Coping with Crises: Oral Narratives and Crisis Management in Kenya and Ethiopia.”

This initiative introduces “Oral Literature for Development” (OL4D) to emphasize the role of culture and creativity in societal progress, addressing issues such as poverty, disease, gender inequality, and ecological challenges.

On April 29, 2025, a stakeholders’ meeting was held at the Institute of Oromo Studies (IOS), Jimma University, with representatives from various organizations and academic departments.

The meeting aimed to evaluate progress, share experiences from previous initiatives, and discuss strategies for improvement. Dr. Teshome Egere, the project coordinator, presented achievements, including the establishment of the OL4D Hub and collaborative meetings with Belgian and Kenyan institutions.

Discussions highlighted successful outcomes, such as the creation of student cultural clubs and initiatives to reconnect youth with oral traditions. Participants emphasized the importance of using indigenous knowledge to address social crises and the need for renewed storytelling traditions in a digital age. Cultural clubs were praised for promoting values like solidarity and environmental care.

The event concluded with a theatrical performance by Theatre Arts students, inspired by Oromo folklore, and traditional blessings, energizing participants for future actions.
