A successful consultative and experience-sharing workshop focused on inclusive higher education in Ethiopia recently took place in Jimma, bringing together national policymakers, university leaders, and advocates for disability rights. The event aimed to bolster inclusivity and accessibility within the nation’s higher education system through a combination of strategic discussions and practical insights.The workshop attracted a diverse array of stakeholders, including Vice Presidents and representatives from several universities, such as Jimma University, Bahir Dar University, Wolaita Sodo University, and Jigjiga University.
Dr. Desalegn Beyene, who represented the Vice President of Jimma University, opened the event by stressing that inclusion is an ongoing journey that demands steadfast institutional commitment and innovation. This message was echoed in a keynote address by Dr. Eba Mijena, who reaffirmed the MoE’s commitment to fostering inclusive education in alignment with national policies and international human rights standards. He emphasized the importance of institutional accountability, creating accessible learning environments, and coordinated efforts to ensure equitable access for students with disabilities.

Key discussions revolved around the current state of inclusion, gaps in policy implementation, and actionable strategies to enhance accessibility, support services, and inclusive teaching practices.
A significant aspect of the workshop was the sharing of real-world experiences and best practices. Mr. Jaffer Lola, Director of the Special Needs Support Center at Jimma University, highlighted institutional advancements such as academic accommodations and assistive technologies. Participants also toured the University’s Special Needs Support Center and Digital Library, gaining firsthand insight into the physical and technological adaptations made to support students.
Dr. Getahun Semeon, Executive Director of ECDD, along with Mr. Yohannes Teklay, ECDD/EMPOWER Project Coordinator, emphasized the vital role of partnerships and initiatives like this workshop in translating policy into meaningful action.
The workshop concluded with a collective commitment from all attendees to strengthen inclusive policies, enhance institutional practices, and promote ongoing collaboration among government entities, universities, and civil society organizations. Jimma University expressed gratitude to ECDD for their support in organizing the event and covering participant costs.We are in the community!
