Continuing and Distance Education (CDE) Office
Background
The Office of Continuing and Distance Education (Office of CDE) at Jimma Institute of Technology (JiT) is dedicated to providing flexible, high-quality education to learners who are unable to attend regular programs due to work commitments, geographical constraints, time limitations, or economic barriers. It was established in 1997 (1990 E.C) and initially offered an Advanced Diploma in Civil Engineering to 25 evening students. Today, the Office of CDE offers a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate programs at affordable tuition rates. Its flexible learning options, including evening classes, weekend, in-service summer programs, and off-campus study, serve to diverse learning needs. Beyond serving learners, the CDE generates revenue to support its operations and contribute to JiT’s financial stability, aligning with Jimma University’s goal of self-sufficiency (autonomy). The Office of CDE has produced qualified graduates at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supporting the nation’s development in various sectors. It currently serves 300 undergraduate students at JiT’ and Agaro Campus, and 76 postgraduate students at JiT and two off-campus sites: Koysha Hydroelectric Power Project Center and Gilgel Gibe Hydroelectric Power I. To further expand its reach and generate income, the Office of CDE is developing short-term training programs that enhance individual and organizational capabilities. These programs address evolving needs, emerging technologies, and contribute to revenue growth. Looking ahead, the Office of CDE is committed to strengthening its existing programs, developing new offerings based on thorough needs assessments, and exploring opportunities for expanding in neighboring regions/countries.
