Jimma Institute of Technology received the 1st Biogas laboratory container

ETH-Soil Project: “Soil improvement in Ethiopia through the energetic and material use of agricultural residues” is a project funded by the German Institute for Biomass Research – DBFZ through a donation obtained from German Economic Development Cooperation BMZ.
This project have an overall plan of construction and installation of the latest model industrial size biogas plant with a gas storage, solid and liquid digestate separation unit. Installation of two container based biogas training and research laboratories is also part of the implementation. The operational energy requirement for the entire project site is provided by solar PV with a three days backup battery bank which is going to installed through this project implementation too.
Accordingly, this project delivered the first state of the art container based biogas laboratory to Jimma Institute of Technology, Jimma University on Saturday, 16th August 2025. On the day of the arrival, the Scientific Director of the institute Engineer Efrem Wakjira welcomed the truck that transported the container at the Jimma City entrance and escorted it to the JiT campus.
The ETH Soil project coordinator Engineer Shewangizaw and other management team of JiT witnessed the arrival and unloading of the container on the same day.
The container arrived to the JiT campus in a good condition with all the equipment packed in it in their original position as it is observed when the container was opened and inspected on 19th August 2025 with a supervisor sent from GIZ InS.
The laboratory container is fully equipped with all the laboratory equipment along with the safety protocols which have a total cost of 306,407 Euros. This facility will play a pivotal role in conducting training and research on biomass technologies in general and biogas in particular. Jimma University would like to express the utmost appreciation for the commitment of DBFZ for the achievement of this milestone of the many more to come through the ETH Soil project implementations.
