Jimma University successfully concluded a three-day Advanced Short Course on Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs): Design, Analysis, and Interpretation, held from August 6–8, 2026. The training brought together PhD students, faculty, physicians, epidemiologists, public health professionals, and economists engaged in impact evaluation.The opening ceremony featured remarks from Dr. Habtewold Detti, Director of the Collaborative Projects Management Office, who highlighted the importance of RCTs for evidence-based policymaking. Professor Zewdie Birhanu, Principal Investigator of the SS-CBHI Project, introduced the lead facilitator, Professor Maria Laura Alzúa Deputy Director of CEDLAS (Argentina), CONICET researcher, and Scientific Director of the Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP).
Participants engaged in intensive sessions covering experimental design, sample size calculation, ITT/TOT/LATE estimation, validity, ethics, and policy translation. In his closing remarks, Professor Zewdie urged participants to apply the training to strengthen ongoing and future research.
The event also featured a collaborative discussion between Professor Mulumebet Abera, Vice President for Research and Partnerships, Professor Alzúa, and the research team to explore future cooperation.
Jimma University extends its gratitude to Professor Alzúa, PEP, FID, leadership, organizers, and all participants. The training was organized by the SS-CBHI Project, funded by the Fund for Innovation in Development (FID) through PEP, marking a significant step toward enhancing RCT capacity in Ethiopia.
