Jimma University Spinoff Simbona Africa Gains EFDA Approval for Life-Saving Neonatal Devices

In a significant advancement for Ethiopia’s healthcare innovation and newborn care, Simbona Africa Healthcare Engineering, a spinoff from Jimma University, has received official approval from the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) for its locally designed and manufactured neonatal medical devices.

These approved devices are vital for addressing two major threats to newborn health: hypothermia and neonatal jaundice. By offering essential, locally-produced solutions for these conditions, Simbona Africa’s technology is set to enhance healthcare outcomes and survival rates for newborns across Ethiopian communities, especially in areas where access to specialized imported equipment is limited.

Simbona Africa’s journey began in 2015 as a dedicated team within Jimma University. The project gained critical early momentum with a seed funding of 1 million Ethiopian Birr from Grand Challenge Ethiopia.

Established by the Federal Ministry of Health in 2015 and hosted by the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI), Grand Challenge Ethiopia is part of a global network focused on fostering innovation to tackle pressing health and development challenges. It collaborates with major international partners, including Grand Challenges Canada, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and USAID, providing essential support for the development and scaling of innovative health solutions. This initial funding and support were pivotal in transforming Simbona’s concepts into tangible, life-saving medical devices.

The EFDA approval represents a significant milestone not only for Simbona Africa but also for Ethiopia’s growing capacity in local healthcare technology development and manufacturing.
Jimma University expressed immense pride in this achievement. The success of Simbona Africa Healthcare Engineering exemplifies the innovative potential nurtured within our institution.
