On May 28, 2028, Jimma University’s Clinical Trial Unit (JUCTU) showcased its initiatives at the annual Conference of the Clinical Trials Network of Ethiopia (CTN-ET), held at the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI). The university’s involvement emphasizes its pivotal role in addressing the significant underrepresentation of clinical trials in Ethiopia and across Africa.
Clinical trials are still scarce on the continent, which limits the generation of local medical evidence and obstructs the application of research findings to enhance patient care. To address this issue, Jimma University established JUCTU, which actively conducts Phase II–IV clinical trials and diagnostic validation studies. These efforts aim to generate robust evidence, connect research with clinical practice, and ultimately improve healthcare services and patient outcomes.
As a founding member of CTN-ET, Jimma University plays a vital role on the network’s steering committee, influencing the future of clinical research in Ethiopia. This year marked a significant achievement with the inaugural Clinical Trials Week in Ethiopia, celebrated from May 20–28. The week focused on bridging clinical practice and research, acknowledging regulatory advancements, and enhancing media engagement.
The theme of the CTN-ET Annual Conference, “Improving Clinical Trials Representation: Opportunities for Ethiopia,” attracted a diverse group of participants, including network member institutions, government officials, regulators, academics, healthcare providers, development partners, industry representatives, and global organizations dedicated to promoting ethical and high-quality clinical research in Africa. During the conference, Jimma University presented JUCTU through a digital display session, providing stakeholders with valuable networking opportunities and avenues for collaboration.
