In a landmark achievement for local healthcare, Jimma University Medical Center (JUMC) has successfully performed its first independent Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) division and closure surgery. The procedure, conducted entirely by JUMC’s own staff without external assistance, marks a significant leap forward in the center’s cardiac surgical capabilities.
The patient, a 4-year-old girl suffering from congenital heart disease caused by a Large Patent Ductus Arteriosus with severe pulmonary hypertension, underwent the complex surgery. A PDA is a common congenital defect where a vital fetal blood vessel fails to close after birth, causing abnormal blood flow between the pulmonary and systemic circulations.
Leading the historic procedure was Dr. Workneh Tesfaye Deme, JUMC’s Cardiothoracic Surgeon. He was supported by a dedicated full operating room team:

The surgery was a resounding success. The young patient has recovered smoothly, is now with her family, and is ready for discharge. Special thanks were extended to Dr. Sabona, Pediatrician at JUMC, and Mr. Netsanet, JUMC Operating Theatre Head Nurse, for their crucial roles.
This milestone follows successful open-heart surgeries performed at JUMC approximately three months prior, which were conducted in collaboration with a specialized team from Tazma Medical and Surgical Specialized Center. JUMC expressed deep gratitude for Tazma’s foundational support.
JUMC, aspiring to become a leading center in Cardiac Surgery and Cardiology in Ethiopia, views this successful independent operation as a critical step towards achieving that goal and significantly improving access to specialized cardiac care in the region.
