Jimma University Launches New Initiative to Support Returnees from Sudan Amid Ongoing Conflict

In response to the escalating conflict in Sudan, a significant number of Ethiopian nationals, particularly from Jimma zone, are returning home under dire circumstances. These returnees are facing numerous challenges, including lost livelihoods, emotional distress from displacement, and difficulties reintegrating into their communities without adequate resources.
To tackle these urgent issues, Jimma University has unveiled a new project titled “Resilient Eco-Friendly Agribusiness for Returnee and Potential Migrants Empowerment (REAP-ME).” This initiative, which has received approval from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), will be implemented in the Kersa and Mana woredas of Jimma Zone.
The REAP-ME project aims to create sustainable economic opportunities tailored to the business interests and prior experiences of the returnees. It will focus on eco-friendly enterprises, including fruit and tree nurseries, vegetable farming, dairy production, and poultry farming. Utilizing the region’s abundant natural resources and fostering a supportive policy environment, the initiative seeks to provide viable livelihoods for returnees while promoting technology transfer and knowledge sharing within local communities.
The project is expected to directly benefit 150 returnees and impact approximately 35,000 family members and community members in the surrounding areas.
Building on the success of four previous collaborative projects between Jimma University and IOM, REAP-ME aims to enhance support for returnees and contribute to reducing irregular migration in Ethiopia, aligning with broader international development goals.
