Jimma University Launches Integrated Farming Project to Empower Women in Sidama Region

Jimma University, in collaboration with the Wondogenet Agricultural Research Center, has introduced an initiative aimed at empowering women through sustainable agriculture. The Women’s Empowerment through Gender Transformative Opportunities (WEGO) project is set to support 50 households in the Shebedino and Wondogenet woredas of the Sidama region by implementing an integrated farming model that includes poultry, goats, sheep, and fish.

Funded by CARE Ethiopia, the WEGO project is being rolled out in the Shebedino and Wondogenet districts, providing participants with extensive training, fish fingerlings, chickens, feed, and other essential resources. This initiative promotes an integrated farming approach that enables women to diversify their income streams while enhancing household nutrition.

The first training sessions commenced on July 17, 2025, in the towns of Basha and Leku, and will continue until July 21, 2025. These sessions focus on various topics including poultry and small ruminants management, fish farming, animal health, and business skills specifically designed for women farmers.

In partnership with the Wondogenet Agricultural Research Center, the project incorporates scientific expertise and sustainable farming techniques. Jimma University has successfully implemented an integrated chicken-fish farming project over the last ten years in the Jimma zone and is now extending this best practice to the Sidama region.

The WEGO initiative is dedicated to fostering women’s economic independence, improving household nutrition, and promoting climate-resilient agricultural practices. Both CARE Ethiopia and Jimma University underscore the project’s significance in advancing gender equality and rural development
