On January 17, 2025, Jimma University unveiled its new Data Science Hub through an engaging workshop focused on leveraging data-driven solutions to transform Africa’s agricultural development for climate adaptation.
In his opening speech, Dr. Jemal Abafita stated, “Today marked a significant milestone in our journey toward innovation and excellence as we inaugurated the Data Science Hub at Jimma University.” He emphasized that this hub was more than just a physical space; it represented a vision to empower multidisciplinary researchers and innovators with the tools and knowledge to leverage data for solving real-world challenges.
Dr. Jemal expressed deep gratitude to the Science for Africa Foundation, whose generous support made this hub a reality. He also warmly welcomed Dr. Fatu, the Science for Africa Foundation’s Program Officer, to Jimma University.
Speakers for the workshop included Dr. Fatu Badiane, Senior Programme Officer (SPO) of the Grand Challenges Africa initiative at the Science for Africa Foundation (SFA Foundation), and Dessalew Yohannes, a Grand Challenges Africa grantee conducting research on climate and agriculture adaptation.
The event included a panel discussion and networking sessions, emphasizing the role of the Data Science Hub in fostering collaboration and innovation. As Jimma University continued to establish itself as a leading research institution in Africa, this initiative underscored its commitment to contributing to sustainable development through data-driven solutions.
