Jimma University Hosts High-Level Erasmus+ Information Day, Promoting National Collaboration

Jimma University, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Ministry of Education, successfully organized a high-level national information session focused on the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme. The hybrid event, held on November 14, 2025, brought together over 150 senior leaders from universities across Ethiopia, including presidents, vice-presidents, and directors.
Entitled “Erasmus+ Information Session for Ethiopia,” the session was inaugurated by Dr. Eba Mijena, CEO for Academic Affairs at the Ministry of Education. In his opening remarks, Dr. Eba highlighted the significant opportunities the Erasmus+ programme (2021-2027) presents for enhancing the quality and global presence of Ethiopian higher education.
The agenda offered a thorough overview of the funding opportunities available under the Erasmus+ framework. A key highlight was Dr. Eba’s detailed presentation on the €613 million designated for Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE). Additional discussions included full scholarships for Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters programmes and initiatives aimed at fostering intercultural skills through virtual exchanges. Kiran Bhujun, ENFP for Mauritius, underscored the availability of full scholarships for joint postgraduate programs centered on sustainability and innovation. Ester Montiel-Cortes from EACEA and Zoly Rakotoniera from Madagascar elaborated on online dialogue initiatives that enhance intercultural competencies and EU policy studies. Dr. Jenny Elmaco provided valuable insights into navigating the EU Funding Portal and tips for crafting competitive proposals.
Bridging theory and practice, the forum featured testimonials from Ethiopian institutions that have successfully obtained Erasmus+ funding. Dr. Ephram Tekle of Kotebe Metropolitan University presented an engaging case study of a funded project, while Professor Esayas Alemayehu and Dr. Edris Yeba from Jimma University shared their institution’s experiences and the tangible benefits of EU collaboration.
A recurring theme throughout the proceedings was the necessity for national collaboration. In a decisive address, Jimma University’s President, Dr. Jemal Abafita, expressed a strong commitment to partnering with other Ethiopian institutions. “Jimma University is fully prepared to collaborate with any national institution and is eager to share its extensive experience in managing successful EU-funded projects,” Dr. Abafita stated, emphasizing a collective approach to securing international grants.
The event concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, equipping attendees with practical knowledge for the upcoming call for proposals, which remains open until February 2026. The forum is widely regarded as a crucial step in aligning Ethiopian universities with global partnerships and unlocking new pathways for academic development and innovation.
