Jimma University is celebrating Research Week from April 27–30, 2024, featuring a series of programs.
As part of this event, a “Community Day” discussion forum was held, bringing together university leaders, researchers, farmers, local elders, religious fathers, monks, traditional conflict resolvers (Hede Sinkie), youth, as well as heads of government institutions and charitable organizations.
Professor Ahmed Zeynudin, CEO of the Health Institute, opened the day’s event with a speech. He noted that Jimma University and the people of Jimma are like two sides of the same coin, each essential to the other. He stated that the university has adopted a community-centered educational philosophy and is carrying out numerous community service initiatives. He emphasized the importance of this consultative program, which aims to deliver research-backed services capable of further transforming people’s lives.
A research paper on community-centered educational philosophy was presented by Mr. Moyata Bariyoso, Deputy Director of Community Service at Jimma University, followed by discussion.
Mr. Kamil Mehamed, Director of Community Service and Engagement at Jimma University, presented an overview of the university’s ongoing work in health, agriculture, education, water supply, the Green Legacy initiative, and job creation.
Participants, for their part, praised the university for living out its motto, “We are in the community,” and for its contributions. They also urged Jimma University scholars to use their knowledge and experience in an integrated manner to eliminate problems at their roots and fulfill their national mission.
Finally, the forum agreed on the need to sustain successes in community service delivery and discussed corrective measures for challenges encountered, with active input from all participants.
