Jimma University held a pivotal two-day capacity-building workshop on January 13-14, 2025. The event brought together different academic and administrative staff, including deans, department heads, PG coordinators, and senior academic leaders, to refine the university’s master’s and PhD programs in alignment with institutional, national, and global priorities.
The workshop commenced with a welcoming speech by Dr. Tadesse Habtamu, Vice President for Academic Affairs, who underscored the critical role of postgraduate education in driving innovation, research, and societal development. He emphasized that program reviews are essential for maintaining academic excellence and ensuring graduates are equipped with the advanced skills and knowledge needed to meet labor market demands and global challenges.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Jemal Abafita, President of Jimma University, highlighted the institution’s commitment to becoming a leading research-intensive university. He noted that the workshop marks a significant step toward achieving this vision by fostering a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration. Dr. Jemal also acknowledged the efforts of the Accreditation Coordinating Team (ACT) and all participants for their dedication to enhancing the quality of education and research at the university.
The workshop featured a series of presentations and hands-on sessions led by distinguished experts. They discussed the importance of self-study in postgraduate program reviews, outlining key metrics for evaluating program performance, such as curriculum relevance, faculty qualifications, and student outcomes.
They also presented Jimma University’s guidelines for postgraduate program reviews, focusing on competency-based frameworks for PhD programs and strategies for effective external evaluations. Their presentations even probed into the alignment of Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) and Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs), emphasizing the importance of developing measurable and stakeholder-informed outcomes that address societal and industry needs. Participants engaged in collaborative activities to draft PEOs and PLOs, map program objectives to learning outcomes, and align programs with national and international standards.
The event concluded with a closing remark by Dr. Teklu Tafesse, Head of the President’s Office and Senior Advisor for Institutional Reforms and Transformation. Dr. Teklu expressed gratitude to the participants and organizers for their commitment to elevating the quality of postgraduate education at Jimma University
