Jimma University convened a multi-stakeholder consultative meeting to confront pressing road and transport safety challenges amid fuel shortages, policy shifts, and ongoing development projects. The gathering brought together government officials, transport sector representatives, researchers, and community leaders from Jimma Zone, Jimma City, and Agaro City to identify service delivery bottlenecks and co-develop actionable solutions for safer roads.
Officially opening the workshop, Professor Muluemebet Abera, Vice President for Research and Partnerships, reaffirmed the University’s dedication to reducing traffic crashes through evidence-based research, strategic partnerships, and grassroots engagement. She underscored the institution’s broader mission to advance efficient, affordable, and safe transport systems—not only through research publications but also via conferences, consultative forums, and awareness campaigns across Oromia, the Southwestern region, and nationally.
The meeting included insightful presentations from several key experts. Dr. Getachew Tilahun examined the Safe System Approach along with the 5 Ps of Transport Systems model. Dr. Nega Jibat presented the objectives, core issues, and expected outcomes of the consultation. Chief Inspector Negash Tilahun from the Jimma City Traffic Police provided an analysis of traffic crash patterns and the associated challenges in the zone. Mr. Abay Habtamu from the Jimma City Transport Agency discussed operational obstacles in local transport service delivery.
During dynamic discussions, participants from over seventeen sectors analyzed transport and safety issues in Jimma Zone, Jimma City, and Agaro City, offering practical solutions. The session concluded with a detailed action plan outlining collaborative initiatives to be implemented in the upcoming budget year, aimed at improving transport services and enhancing road safety across the region.
