Jimma University and University of Warwick Collaboration Highlights Mental Health Workforce Innovation at the 2026 UK Global Health Summit

The UK Global Health Summit 2026 was held under the theme “Shaping Tomorrow’s Health, Together,” bringing together around 300 global health leaders, policymakers, diaspora professionals, and development partners. The summit focused on strengthening globally connected health systems, advancing equity, and promoting innovative, partnership-driven approaches to health workforce development in a post-aid context. Key discussions emphasized the importance of mutual learning, long-term collaboration, and rethinking traditional global health hierarchies to support more equitable and sustainable health systems.

The collaboration between Jimma University and University of Warwick was invited to showcase its partnership model and innovative project titled:

“Innovating Mental Health Workforce Development in LMICs: Adapting the WHO mhGAP-IG into Pre-Service and Online Training of Non-Specialist Health Professionals in Ethiopia.” The project was successfully implemented at four Ethiopian Universities, Jimma, Arsi, Arba Minch and Wolkite.

During the session, Dr. Elias Mulat presented evidence on how adapting the WHO mhGAP-IG into pre-service and digital training has strengthened mental health competencies among non-specialist health professional students in Ethiopia. The initiative demonstrated the feasibility of integrating competency-based mental health training into routine educational programmes using blended and online learning approaches.

In Parallel the project achievement is also present at Warwick University, at seminar organized by Warwick center for Global Health (https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/med/about/centres/wcfgh/news/?newsItem=8ac672c49d006520019d0bb811e6254d)

The project was implemented with support from the UK Department of Health and Social Care through Global Health Partnerships under the Global Health Workforce Development Programme Phase 2.

The presentation highlighted Jimma University’s growing leadership in global mental health capacity building and its contribution to advancing equitable, partnership-based health workforce development.
