On October 31, 2025, Jimma University proudly launched the “Research Today” seminar series, uniting innovative thinkers to delve into transformative ideas that are shaping our world—from digital advancements to environmental solutions. The inaugural event saw vibrant participation, with over 51 scholars, practitioners, and network leaders joining virtually from across the globe, alongside 20 researchers attending in person at the Jimma University headquarters.

AI The Future of Communication:
Mike Hailu Gebreyohanes, Managing Director of TIBBEB-MBC, UK, shared insights on how Artificial Intelligence is transforming global communication and governance. He illustrated AI’s role not just as a tool but as a creative collaborator that enhances idea refinement, bridges cultural divides, and improves decision-making processes. His session emphasized that the era of sophisticated dialogue is already upon us.
From Waste to Wonder: The Green Fuel Revolution:
Prof. Dr. Venkata Ramayya Ancha inspired attendees with his vision for a circular economy. He showcased practical strategies for converting invasive weeds, eggshells, and other local waste into clean biofuel, sustainable aviation fuel, and eco-friendly products. His presentation provided a compelling roadmap for creating a cleaner, greener planet through innovative waste conversion technologies.
Nature’s Answer to Climate Change:
Dr.-Ing. Wakjira Takala presented compelling evidence from Ethiopia about the effectiveness of Nature-Based Solutions. His research highlighted that strategies like landscape restoration are not only cost-effective but also multifunctional in addressing water and climate challenges. He outlined essential pathways for scaling these crucial environmental initiatives.
The seminar series kicked off with an inspiring opening address from Dr. Jemal Abafita, President of Jimma University, who reiterated the institution’s commitment to research excellence and innovation.
Prof. Mulumbet Abera, Vice President for Research and Partnership, provided a comprehensive overview of the university’s strategic vision for the seminar series, emphasizing the importance of academic gatherings in advancing knowledge.
Prof. Amare, GKEN founder and chair, delivered an insightful summary of the network’s impactful contributions over the past 15 years, highlighting significant achievements such as training PhD scholars, publishing multiple academic works, and supporting numerous MSc and PhD students in their research endeavors.
