Jimma University and Ghent University Commemorate over 20 Years of Partnership, Paving the Way for Future Collaborative Success

Jimma University, in collaboration with the Network for Advancement of Sustainable Capacity in Education and Research in Ethiopia (NASCERE) and the Strategic International Partnership (SIP) of Ghent University, is hosting a significant four-day workshop from August 25-28, 2025. The event, titled “Strengthening Collaborative Excellence: Reflecting on a Decade of NASCERE SIP and Envisioning Future Partnerships,” is taking place at Jimma University.
This workshop gathers academic leaders, esteemed researchers, and PhD candidates to celebrate a decade of accomplishments, tackle ongoing challenges, and outline a new strategic plan for the future of the partnership between Jimma University and Ghent University.
Serving as a vibrant platform for dialogue, the event celebrates key milestones while emphasizing the importance of sustaining and expanding the partnership’s impactful contributions. Over the past ten years, the NASCERE and SIP initiatives have emerged as a remarkable success story in enhancing academic and research capacity in Ethiopia.

To date, these programs have produced 28 PhD graduates and created over 90 PhD opportunities, significantly contributing to human capacity development. The research generated has led to high-impact publications addressing critical local issues, garnering recognition in esteemed academic journals.
However, the workshop also sheds light on pressing challenges that require immediate attention. Limited research funding remains a significant obstacle, constraining project scope and support for PhD candidates. Discussions will focus on refining program structures to improve efficiency and maximize impact.
A highlight of the workshop is the presentation of scientific contributions by NASCERE PhD candidates through oral and poster sessions. These presentations showcase innovative solutions to local and regional challenges, underscoring the program’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge research.
Looking forward, delegates will explore new strategies for joint resource mobilization and develop renewed foundations to sustain a partnership that has flourished for over two decades. The enduring collaboration between Jimma University and Ghent University stands as a powerful testament to the role of international cooperation in promoting sustainable development and facilitating global knowledge exchange.
