Jimma University, in collaboration with Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevölkerung (DSW) Ethiopia, has been implementing a flagship project titled “Strengthening Local Structures for Sustainable Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) and Livelihoods of Young People in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia.”
The initiative seeks to enhance young people’s particularly university students’ access to tailored SRH information and youth-friendly services within the university compound.
Through the project, university students and staff have benefited from life-skills and capacity-building trainings aimed at improving awareness, service utilization, and sustainable support systems related to sexual and reproductive health.
In a major boost to service delivery, DSW–Ethiopia has donated equipment and consumables valued at approximately ETB 5 million to support the Jimma University Student Clinic, One-Stop Center, youth clubs, and the Community Radio. The donation is expected to strengthen access to accurate SRH information and youth-friendly services for students and the surrounding community.
The President of Jimma University, Dr. Jemal Abafita, and DSW officials led by Mr. Feyera Abdissa held a high-level discussion on the project’s progress and the broader partnership between the two institutions. During the discussion, Mr. Feyera elaborated on the objectives of the project and DSW’s mission to support youth health and development. Dr. Jemal highlighted the rapid growth and positive impact of the collaboration on university students and formally acknowledged the timely donation of equipment. To further institutionalize and expand their collaboration, Jimma University and DSW–Ethiopia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at extending their partnership. The MoU is expected to pave the way for continued joint initiatives in sexual and reproductive health, youth empowerment, and capacity building.
The strengthened partnership underscores a shared commitment to promoting sustainable SRH services and empowering young people through knowledge, skills, and supportive institutional structures.
