Jimma Institute of Technology Receives First Biogas Laboratory Equipment

Jimma Institute of Technology (JIT) has received its first advanced biogas laboratory equipment as part of the ETH-Soil Project, aimed at improving soil in Ethiopia through the use of agricultural residues. Funded by the German Institute for Biomass Research (DBFZ) and the German Economic Development Cooperation (BMZ), the €306,407 facility was delivered on August 16, 2025.

This container-based biogas laboratory will support training and research on biomass technologies, particularly biogas production. The ETH-Soil Project also includes plans for an industrial-sized biogas plant and additional training laboratories, all powered by solar energy with backup systems.

Jimma University expresses its profound gratitude to DBFZ for their unwavering commitment and support in achieving this significant milestone. The introduction of this biogas laboratory marks a pivotal step towards advancing research and training in sustainable energy solutions in Ethiopia.
