  • IOS aspires to be a globally recognized center of excellence in Oromo studies and indigenous knowledge research, advancing community-engaged scholarship that informs policy, enriches academic discourse, and contributes to sustainable development in Africa and beyond.

MISSION

  • The Institute of Oromo Studies is dedicated to generating, preserving, and disseminating knowledge about Oromo culture, language, history, and indigenous knowledge systems through rigorous interdisciplinary research, documentation and academic engagement.

The Institute works to:

  • Conduct high-quality, interdisciplinary research on Oromo indigenous knowledge systems and practices
  • Systematically collect, document, and preserve cultural and intellectual heritage
  • Facilitate access to reliable and relevant data on Oromo studies for scholars, policymakers, and communities
  • Promote the application of indigenous knowledge to contemporary development challenges
